Creatures of the Magic Water repeated (News date: 22-12-02)
The Survival TV programme Creatures of the Magic Water received a repeat broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK on 10th December at the rather unusual time of 4:45 am! The programme, which was first broadcast in July 1996, looks at the wildlife that lives in the rainforest region of north Brazil and was filmed and produced by Nick Gordon. Ant wrote and recorded the music for the programme in collaboration with Joji Hirota. (Thanks to Barbara Kirk for the information on this
Two exclusive tracks on compilation (News date: 2-12-02)
Two more of Ant's Library music pieces that have not previously appeared on a regular release are included on Tranquil Moods, a National Trust compilation that is available now. The compilation was actually released back in May of this year but with minimal publicity, so details of the release have only reached us recently. Ant's tracks are Summer Dawn and Nightingale and like Chartwell, which was released on the National Trust Music Collection set last year, were part of an orchestral Library project called English Pastoral.
The compilation is a 2 CD set which features a selection of classical pieces on the first CD and a selection of contemporary pieces (including Ant's tracks) on the second disc. A contribution from the sale of each CD goes to the National Trust to help their conservation work in the UK. A couple of minor errors: The sleeve notes for the compilation inaccurately suggest that Ant has his own Concert Orchestra (if only...) and that he conducted the Orchestra on the recording. The credits for these tracks should read: Performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Alan Wilson.
Tranquil Moods is released by BMG and is available now from Amazon.co.uk, who are calling this CD The National Trust Music Collection just to confuse things!
Jurassic Shark repeated (News date: 17-11-02)
The TV programme Jurassic Shark received a second repeat broadcast on Channel 5 in the UK on 17th November. The programme, which was first broadcast in November 2000, looks at the life and history of sharks. Ant wrote and recorded the music for the programme in collaboration with Joji Hirota.
Intergalactic Touring Band album CD release planned (News date: 17-11-02)
Voiceprint are set to release the long-deleted Intergalactic Touring Band album on CD in January of next year. Originally released in 1977, the album features contributions from artists such as Larry Fast, Rod Argent, Arthur Brown, Percy Jones from Brand X, Dave Cousins, Annie Haslam, Ben E King, Meatloaf and Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt from Status Quo. More importantly, it also includes an appearance by Ant who plays acoustic guitar on the track Reaching Out. Ant's contribution to the album was recorded when he was in the US in March 1977 to promote The Geese & The Ghost. (Thanks to Phil Morris for passing this news on).
Record Collector article (News date: 3-11-02)
As we reported back in January, Ant met up with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford at The Farm to give a joint interview to Paul Russell for a forthcoming article on the early days of Genesis on the road to be published in Record Collector magazine. The interview is included as part of a 12-page Genesis feature in the November issue of the magazine, alongside interviews with Steve Hackett, Phil Collins and Richard Macphail.
One minor point about the article - the photo of Ant with Mike and Tony included in it was taken in January of this year (the "Winter 2002" caption is slightly misleading!).
Release of Radio Clyde session planned (News date: 27-10-02)
Voiceprint Records are set to make an official CD release of Ant's Radio Clyde session that he recorded in 1978 as part of the promotion for Wise After The Event. Variable quality recordings of the session have been in circulation amongst fans for many years and the original master tapes are believed to no longer exist, but it is hoped that the session can be mastered from the best possible source. Peter Cross has designed the cover for the CD, which is his first original artwork for one of Ant's albums in ten years.
There is no news yet on the release date for the CD but we will post any details here as soon as we have them.
Details about the tracks that Ant performed during the Radio Clyde session can be found here.
Mike Rutherford on "This Is Your Life" (News date: 25-9-02)
Mike Rutherford got a big surprise on Friday 20th September, when he found himself the subject of the UK BBC TV show "This Is Your Life". Ant was one of the guests on the show and appeared alongside Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Daryl Stuermer, Bill Bruford and John Silver, with Peter Gabriel sending greetings via a video message. Due to prior commitments, Chris Stewart was unable to travel from Spain for the recording.
The edition with Mike is due to be broadcast as one of the editions in the new series of the show which is scheduled to start transmission in the UK soon.
Ant completes new Library project (News date: 22-9-02)
Ant took a break from the recording of tracks for Private Parts & Pieces XI over the last two weeks to write and record music for a new Library project for Atmosphere Music. As with most of Ant's Library projects, this won't be commercially available.
New pressing of The Sky Road issued by Voiceprint
Blueprint Records have now issued a new pressing of The Sky Road, the second volume in the Missing Links series. This second pressing makes use of the original artwork from the 1994 release of the CD and replaces the revised artwork that accompanied the initial Blueprint re-issue. The track listing of the CD and the catalogue number (BP329CD) remain the same.
New compilation CDs released in Spain
Two new compilation CDs have been released by Astral Records in Spain to help promote Ant's music in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. The two CDs are Soft Vivace (which features a selection of previously released tracks from Ant's back catalogue) and All Our Lives (a double CD re-issue of the previously released albums The Meadows of Englewood and Live Radio Sessions). Both of these CDs have been compiled by Guillermo Cazenave.
Recording starts for Private Parts & Pieces XI
Ant has started work on recording the guitar-based material he has been writing recently. The end results should make up the eleventh volume in the Private Parts & Pieces series.
In between work on current Library projects, Ant has also given a couple of new interviews. The first of these saw Ant meeting up with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford to give a joint interview to Paul Russell for a forthcoming article on the early days of Genesis on the road which has been published in Record Collector magazine.
The second interview that Ant has done was for the BBC World Service Radio programme Introducing The Media (broadcast as part of the World Learning series) and saw Ant talking about the writing and recording process for Library music, on behalf of Library Publishers Atmosphere. Ant also gave a short "live" keyboard demonstration in his studio as part of this.
Online Ant CD shop
Thanks to the folks at Voiceprint Records we are pleased to announce the creation of an online "shop", which provides a nice and easy one-stop way to buy Ant's Voiceprint releases. You can also take advantage of the special price of £9.99 per individual album or £25 for three CDs.
Smallcreep's Day available again on CD
The CD release of Mike Rutherford's Smallcreep's Day (with Ant on keyboards) is now available again, having been out of print for some time. The CD is now available from Steve Hackett's Camino Records or the Hit & Run on-line shop on the Official Genesis Website.
Now if only Virgin would do the same with Wise After The Event....
Exclusive track on new compilation
One of Ant's Library music pieces that has not previously appeared on a regular release is included on National Trust Music Collection, a new compilation that is available now. Ant's track is called Chartwell and it was part of an orchestral Library project called English Pastoral, which featured the BBC Concert Orchestra.
The compilation is a 3 CD set which features a very good selection of well-known classical pieces. A contribution from the sale of each CD goes to the National Trust to help their conservation work in the UK.
The National Trust Music Collection is released by BMG and is available now from Amazon.co.uk
Availability of Antiques
Just as the re-pressing of Tarka becomes available, we have learnt that the stock of Private Parts & Pieces III: Antiques is now almost completely sold out! If you are looking for this CD and come across a copy of it for sale then we recommend buying it now. Hopefully a new pressing of the CD will not take too long to materialise. (Thanks to Peter Reid at Timelapse and Bruce Ray for the information about this).
Wise After The Event
Just to confirm that as mentioned in our Buyers Guide, the Virgin Records CD re-issue of Wise After The Event is currently unavailable, despite suggestions to the contrary from Virgin themselves! Until Virgin press more copies of the album, it won't be possible for any shop or dealer to supply the CD. If Virgin do make the CD available again then we will announce it here.
