Between 2002 and 2005 we ran a Yahoo Group as a means of mailing out news updates.  A total of eleven news updates were posted to the group.

The news updates generally reflected the content of the news page at the time.

The Yahoo Group has now been closed but for reference purposes a condensed archive of the news posted to it is preserved here.

Welcome to the first Anthony Phillips news posting. Here's a quick update of the latest news:

Private Parts & Pieces XI

Ant is currently continuing work on the recording of the next album in the Private Parts & Pieces series, with the focus this time being on guitar-based pieces. He has written a sizeable amount of material for the new album, making use of both 6 and 12-string guitars.

Archive Collection Volume 2

Work has been going on for some time now to catalogue more of Ant's archive of tapes from all eras of his solo career. This has uncovered a sizeable amount of previously unreleased recordings including interesting variations of known pieces as well as tracks that have never seen the light of day in any recorded form. The best of these have been selected for consideration for possible inclusion on a second Archive Collection CD. As work on compiling this collection continues, we hope to include an on-line journal about the compilation of the album on Ant's web site.

New compilation CDs released in Spain

Two new compilation CDs have been released by Astral Records in Spain to help promote Ant's music in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. The two CDs are Soft Vivace (which features a selection of previously released tracks from Ant's back catalogue) and All Our Lives (a double CD re-issue of the previously released albums The Meadows of Englewood and Live Radio Sessions). More details (including full track listings) are now on the site.

Recent additions to the Website

Material recently added to the site include some press reviews and an interview about Soiree, further details about Ant's television work plus the recent news updates from Chris Stewart covering some of the media appearances he made on his recent trip to the UK to promote his new book "A Parrot In The Pepper Tree".

Here's another news update:

1978 Radio Clyde session planned for release

In July 1978 Ant undertook some promotional duties for Wise After The Event, which included recording a live session at Radio Clyde in Scotland. Recordings of the 60 minute show have been doing the rounds amongst fans and collectors for many years but most of the circulating tapes are of somewhat variable quality and all of them play slightly fast as Radio Clyde elected to slightly speed up the recording of the session. Quite why they did this remains a bit of a mystery to this day...

Now a couple of recordings (including one taken directly from the original masters and given to Ant by Radio Clyde) of the session with better sound quality have been located and with current technology allowing the speed of the recording to be brought back to normal, Voiceprint Records are planning an official CD release of the session. The CD will also have the added attraction of original artwork by Peter Cross - his first album cover for Ant since 1992.

The release date of the session has not been announced yet but as it soon as we have any more details then we'll announce them on Ant's site and on this list.

Intergalactic Touring Band reissue

Another interesting forthcoming Voiceprint release is the CD re-issue of the 1977 Various Artists album The Intergalactic Touring Band. Amongst an interesting and diverse selection of featured artists (Larry Fast, Rod Argent, Arthur Brown, Percy Jones from Brand X, Dave Cousins, Annie Haslam, Ben E King, Meatloaf and Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt from Status Quo) is Ant, who plays acoustic guitar on the track "Reaching Out".

Intergalactic Touring Band is currently scheduled for release in January 2003

Other projects

Ant continues to work in the studio recording tracks for the next Private Parts & Pieces album. There is still no news to pass on of track titles or a possible release date yet.

In the meantime work is also going on to assemble the track listing for Archive Collection 2, as well as checking out archive holdings for potential extra tracks for the re-issue of Wise After The Event, which is planned for release as soon as the contractual period with Virgin Records comes to a close and the release rights for the album revert to Ant's control. More detail on these projects will be posted on Ant's site as they come to fruition.

Intergalactic Touring Band re-issue out now

The Voiceprint CD reissue of the 1977 Various Artists album The Intergalactic Touring Band is now available. Snapper Music "Soundscapes" compilation

As part of their Recall series, Snapper Music are releasing a 2 CD compilation of some of Ant's music. This mid-price release is designed as an introduction to Ant's music for those who have yet to sample it's delights. The track listing is as follows:

CD 1 - Bleak House / Tregenna Afternoons / Lucy: An Illusion / Old Wives Tale / The Women Were Watching / Heart of Darkness / Bubble & Squeak / The Anthem From Tarka / Slow Dance (excerpt)

CD 2 - Land of Dragons / Boulevard of Fallen Leaves / Cathedral Woods / Sail The World (opening theme) / Exile / Chinese Walls / She'll Be Waiting / Turtle Race / Fiesta Del Chirangas / Passepied

There is no previously unreleased material on this compilation. The release date (subject to change) is currently set for late April.

Radio Clyde

The official Voiceprint release of Ant's 1978 session for Radio Clyde is now in the final stages of production and is scheduled to appear in May. Peter Cross has done the artwork for the CD, his first design for Ant since 1992. I've also written some sleeve notes for it.

The track listing is as follows:

Here's another news update from Ant.

Recent and new releases

Since the last news posting, the Soundscapes compilation and Radio Clyde have both been released. Soundscapes unfortunately fell foul of an error on the part of Snapper Music who managed to include two completely different tracks on each of the CDs to the actual tracklisting! If you select Heart of Darkness on CD1 you will actually hear Dawn Over The Lake and the Opening Theme from Sail The World is actually the version of Reaper from the Living Room Concert.... Snapper Music have been made aware of these errors and have said that they will be corrected on future pressings.

Voiceprint have also recently released Quique Berro Garcia's debut solo album Dreams which includes his interpretations of Ant's Nocturne and Field of Eternity as well as other fine acoustic guitar pieces. Ant says that Quique plays Nocturne far better than he does and he's not joking!

Also just out is Escape, a further National Trust compilation of various classical and instrumental pieces. The release includes the previously unavailable orchestral piece Lyme Bay, which Ant originally wrote for a Library music release called English Pastoral. Escape is the third such release to include otherwise unavailable orchestral pieces composed by Ant and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Alan Wilson. The previous two National Trust releases - The National Trust Music Collection and Tranquil Moods are also still available. A full discography entry for
Escape has just been added to Ant's site.

Archive Collection Volume 2

Work continues on compiling Archive Collection Volume 2 and updates about this are being included by your intrepid reporter in the Production Journal on the site. It now looks as if this second volume will be a 2 CD set (2 full-length CDs as opposed to one full-length CD and a bonus disc). More news on this soon.

Other projects

Ant continues to work on material for the next Private Parts & Pieces album in between other projects. He has now written over 40 tracks for it and is basing the material around stringed instruments of all varieties - 6 & 12-string guitars, classical guitar, charanga, cittern in a mixture of solos and duets. He has also recently finished work on writing and recording the music for a pilot TV programme for a potential seven-part series in collaboration with Joji Hirota, and is currently starting work on a new library music project for Atmosphere.

After a slightly longer than anticipated pause, we have some news about Archive Collection Volume Two. As so much material has come to light it looks almost certain that this will now be a 2 CD release, with each CD containing over 70 minutes of material.

Here's how the collection currently shapes up chronologically in terms of the original recording dates. Track titles and the final running order are still being decided and this listing is still subject to change.

Here's another news update from Ant

Back catalogue

Firstly, the EMI re-release of 1984 seems to have been delayed and is now currently scheduled for release on 1st March. This is a straight re-pressing of the original 1991 CD issue and there are no extra tracks on the CD.

Secondly, the EMI re-release of Wise After The Event continues to have somewhat limited availability, with the normally reliable Amazon having real trouble to maintain a continuous level of stock. Happily Camino Records do have a better supply of the CD and can supply it. Links to the relevant page on their site can be found on our news page and the Buyers Guide. As
with the re-release of 1984, this is a straight re-pressing of the original 1991 CD issue with no extra tracks other than Squirrel.

We've finally managed to establish that the end of Ant's contractual period with EMI/Virgin falls in June 2005 and in theory this is the earliest date that The Geese & The Ghost, Wise After The Event and 1984 can be re-issued by Voiceprint Records. However, discussions about this are currently underway and we'll report when there is some definite news as to when the re-issues may appear.

Archive Collection Volume 2

Archive Collection Volume 2 is now completed and the 2 CD set is currently planned for release by Voiceprint on 26th April. The full track listing has just been posted on Ant's site.

Here's another news update from Ant

Archive Collection Volume 2

As some of you may be aware, there has been a slight delay in the release date for Archive Collection Volume 2, with the album now set to be released on May 10th. As we've seen in the past, Voiceprint do have a somewhat flexible approach to release dates but hopefully the CD won't be delayed any further.

Camino Records have asked Ant to sign all copies of the CD pre-ordered through the sales page on their site. For practical reasons this means that they have to wait until their stock arrives before Ant can get signing so there will be a short delay in the pre-ordered copies being sent out.

1984 re-issue

EMI were planning to re-press the original CD release of 1984. However, planned release dates have come and gone without any sign of the CD and at the present time no new release date has been announced for the CD. If we do receive any definite news of a release date then we'll add it to the site.

In the meantime, a re-issue of 1984 is planned when the release rights revert to Ant's control next year alongside The Geese & The Ghost and Wise After The Event.

New Genesis book

A new Italian Genesis book entitled "Genesis: il fiume del costante cambiamento" is out now. Written by Mario Giametti, the editor of the long-running Italian Genesis magazine Dusk, the book includes over a 100 photos of the band including some rarely seen shots and Ant has written the preface to the book.

I just took a look at the list of news postings and was slightly shocked to see that the last one went out in May 2004! So apologies for the lack of any communication for so long and on with the latest news update from Ant.

New Album

Ant is in the final stages of completing the editing and mixing of his new album before mastering it with Simon Heyworth. A release date in the Autumn still looks most likely.

The material that Ant has written and recorded for the album is based around stringed instruments of all varieties including 6 & 12-string guitars, classical guitar, charanga and cittern in a mixture of solos and duets.

Album re-issues

As you may be aware, the rights to The Geese & The Ghost, Wise After The Event and 1984 are due to revert to Ant's control soon as his contractual period with Virgin Records comes to an end. The plan is to re-issue these three albums in a remastered form through Voiceprint Records and as well as remastering each album we are hoping to include a selection of bonus tracks for each of them. Hopefully each album can be expanded to a 2 CD set to include as much extra material as possible.

Whilst Ant has been working on his new album I have been going through all the available tapes for each of the albums to identify any possible extra material. The good news is that Ant has nearly all the original tapes (across all formats) for the three albums in his archives. The slight downside (if you can call it that) is that there are so many tapes it is taking some time to go through all of them but some interesting tracks have already come to light with the prospect of more to be located in due course.

A potential release date for the re-issues has not been set yet.

Just a short - but hopefully interesting - update this time.

New album

Ant's new album is now completed and set for release in October. The album is called Field Day and is a double album of pieces based around acoustic stringed instruments in both solo and duet form. As well as the usual 6-string and 12-string guitar pieces, Ant has also composed new pieces for charanga, English bazouki and cittern.

There will be more details about the album (including the full track listing) soon.
